A Quick Note on Talking About Media Diversity

stephentstone:

I posted a form of this over on 4chan just a bit ago, but I figured Tumblr could use a good dose of this.

Diversity in any form of media (either in the makeup of creators or the content of media itself)? Good. Treating women, gay people, people of color, et al (whether fictional or real) like actual people? Good. Changing the media we create to better reflect the times? Good. Productive and meaningful discussions about all those things? Very, very good.

Creators going overboard with attempts at diversity (to the point where it comes off as tokenism) for the sake of trying to ‘make up for lost time’ or some other bullshit justification? Bad. People on either side of the ‘fight’ going overboard with complaints about even the smallest attempt at diversity? Bad. Generalizing either side with cartoonish caricatures when both sides contain actual people with actual ongoing lives and actual thoughts/opinions/beliefs that may evolve over time? Very, very bad.

Social Just—I mean, Social Revenge Warriors on both sides of the aisle in any such argument can fuck right off. We need productive discussions about diversity and representation and sexism and other such subjects; we don’t need one side endlessly complaining about the other side’s supposed ‘sins’ and treating everyone on the blamed side as irredeemable (regardless of which side does the complaining).

Stop looking for a fight and start looking for a way to create a positive change, goddammit.

Dan Fessler’s HD Index Painting Technique let’s you paint pixel art in Photoshop in a non-destructive manner, and lets you use pretty much every tool in a perfectly pixel-gradient fashion!

The article gives you everything you need to try it out for yourself. It’s easy to set up and use, and the results are so fucking cool.

pixel artists everywhere dying just so they can roll in their graves

wwwwwHHAAAT

I am flipping my lid indeed over this. Imagine the possibilities! This bridges painting and pixelart in the same way that the printing press must have made writing redistributable and usable by a large non-elite population.

is this a fraud? o.O

Yeah, as someone who (barely) calls himself a pixel artist, I gotta call bullshit on this ‘technique’. I know it sounds all high-and-mighty to say this, but ‘true’ pixel artists work with their art on the individual pixel level. Shortcuts exists to make their lives easier (e.g. the line tool, the ‘bucket fill’), but those shortcuts don’t take all of the work out of making an actual piece. This ‘technique’ does, though.

I can only imagine what sort of damage this ‘technique’ could cause to the overall artform of pixel art and the communities surrounding it, especially if this ‘technique’ becomes widespread enough to truly push out the artists who work with pixel art using ‘pure’ (read: individual pixel level) methodology.
